Sparklite Review - Roguelike visually charming has no spark

I was about to worship Sparklite. From the first trailer, I was seduced by his captivating art pixel and what looked like a fun world to explore like Zelda s, with a danger and treasure to wait at each corner. I have a weakness for the sets of isometric pixels like Crosscode, usually, buy them impulsively before you know what s going on. It often brought me a lot of joy in my career as a player, but from time to time you find yourself with something you did not expect. Something that, whatever your efforts, let you frustrated and dismayed.

Sparklite In the best of cases left me the feeling of everything is fine, I guess and, in the worst case, made me want to turn off my switch and go play something else. And in a recent landscape that covers AAA shows like Death Stranding, or the Pokemon Sword & Shield of this weekend, it is difficult for me to justify you. Do not doing this. So enter the subject. You play Ada, a silent protagonist who wants to save Geodia s world against a villain known as Baron. In the first few minutes, you find yourself with a small robot robot that sacrifices to save you. It was a moving moment that made me want to see what was going to follow, but strangely, there is not much else.

There is a story in Sparklite but the details are often rare and rare. The NPCs you find in the world tend to get out of a bizarre blender but do not do much to build the world more. Which becomes the first disappointment. Later in your trip, you will meet really impressive bosses, the Titans, but apart from their impressive show, they often boil down to some mechanisms and frustrating tests. Mechanically, ADA has a key that she handles like a sword. A button rotates the key while another button lifts up. You can also unlock objects like an arc or a small explosive airship that you can direct against enemies. These unlocks are continuing in the form of plans that you can spend money to create, or widgets that can help you solve environmental riddles. And even if some are really fun and creative, they do not do much to shake the too familiar feeling of Sparklite gameplay.

I was hoping that by finding more of these objects and upgrades, I would find what makes Sparklite unique. Hyperlight Drifter was punitive but precise in a melancholy world where the NPCs spoke you through images. Bastion worked in a similar space with a well-built story. Crosscode was rhythmic and intense with a parodic history of MMO who has kept laughter. In Sparklite, you simply crush your enemies and hope you dodge in time. And you sometimes talk to someone. That s it. The main loop is that you go down to land, you use your combination to beat the guys, then you die for non-anticipated nonsense, let s apply at your base, use your currency (known as Sparklite) and Rinse it again. A little grace that saves is that you do not waste sparklite when you die, allowing you to grow as needed.

So, take all of this and add a pinch of extremely difficult boss meetings and you have a recipe for most of the boredom with a big dose of frustration. Of course, throughout the trip, you can find passive upgrades in the form of patches that can be equipped via a limited gate 3 × 3. These combinations combine lifebar increases or cards that can help to attenuate the pain of the level generated randomly. And it goes too, I guess. You can explore dungeons, meet various enemies and unlock new biomes to explore, but everything exists in the same loop, in the same mechanisms, with the same feeling of familiarity that everything is fine.

It s your puzzle when you play Sparklite. You can not stop you from thinking that everything is a bit too familiar, as you have already done in other games that have brought some special sauce to the procedure. While more and more India arrive in a charming paint paint, it is not enough to shout on Game Zelda games or the thug and execute them. You have to bring something new, or something unique at the table. Whether it s the story, the mechanics, the construction of the world or all the above, it depends on each game. Of course, there are very worse games that Sparklite, but there are also much better games, with similar structures and appearances resembling thugs, which are worth it. Sparklite comes to live in the middle. How are you. It s good. His art is beautiful and his wonderful music, but his magic lacks. So, if you have nothing to do and it seems that your jam is ready, try it. It is very good. Personally, I need something a little more than agree these days.
